Blackpool Super Casino Bid: David vs. Goliath

Blackpool's efforts to snag the super casino license in Britain is being likened to a "David vs. Goliath" battle.

Blackpool is the smallest town in running for the super casino license, and is up against the more prominent bids of London, Manchester and Glasgow.

Blackpool ranked third in the initial ranking that the Casino Advisory Panel came out with, but the town still remains a favorite of bookies.

One leading online bookmaker, Paddypower.com, has published a list of odds, placing Blackpool as joint 6/4 favorite with Greenwich, the frontrunner with its bid for the Millennium Dome.

The Casino Advisory Panel's ranking for the second round would not be affected by the preceding ranking. It is expected to see more in-depth investigations of each individual bid. The next step would see the panel visiting each of the eight shortlisted towns and cities.

Supporters of the Blackpool bid believe that they have the strongest case in terms of regeneration.

The Casino Advisory Panel is set to make a recommendation to the Secretary of State by the and of the year. The government is expected to award the license early next year.

Blackpool is battling against Manchester, Cardiff, Sheffield, Newcastle, Glasgow and London's Millennium Dome and Wembley for the highly coveted super casino license.

Supporters believe that the super casino will bring massive regeneration benefits through jobs and investment.
